Working for a small company in the southwest of England, Catherine is involved in every aspect of contaminated land investigation and risk assessment, from quoting and investigation design, through to desk studies and walkover surveys, the intrusive investigation and subsequent interpretation and assessment, and on to supervision of remedial works, with validation testing and monitoring.

Recently, much of Catherine’s time has been spent working on a large residential-led mixed use development in Cornwall, a site that includes three former landfill sites, up to twenty recorded mine shafts with associated mine waste and mineral lodes, as well as infilled quarries. In addition to Phase 1 and Phase 2 contamination investigations and assessments, Catherine has also been involved in the production of DoWCoP Materials Management Plans (MMPs) and the Ground Conditions Chapter of an Environmental Statement, which has helped enable to site being granted a Local Development Order (LDO), which in effect allows the developer to build without seeking further permission from the council (LDOs are rarely granted).

As well as working on larger sites, Catherine’s skills are equally valuable, arguably more so, on smaller brownfield redevelopment projects. One such project from last year exemplifies this.

The site was a former petrol filling station, which was the client’s first brownfield site and had been bought in ignorance of the potential contamination remediation costs. As usual, Catherine ably undertook the desk study and walkover survey, followed by an intrusive investigation, from which she was able to carry out human health and controlled waters risk assessments (the latter of which was relatively complex P20 assessment), followed by the supervision and validation of the remediation works.

However, what sets Catherine apart from others was illustrated on this project, where was able explain to the client, in a clear and non technical manner, what would be necessary to satisfy the regulatory authorities and why. At the same time, Catherine was able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the regulatory authorities that no additional remedial measures were required to protect the water environment, thus limiting the novice developer’s remediation costs.
